Earth vs. Fire
I had an ele. Then I deleted him so I'd have a free PvP slot, now I've remade him and am planning to take him through the game before factions comes out. Now my question is this....
Should I try an earth ele? Or should I play with a fire ele?
Here's the reason for my question. The first time I played through with an elementalist, I used the typical AoE fire spells. I was very fond of the point blank AoE spells and the speed at which I could get them out (ie... Flame burst, inferno). I switch to an Air Ele build once I realized that SS was going ot outdamage me every time in AoE.
So now that I'm planning to go through all this a second time, I wanted to try something new, but I wondered if it was worth my time. I wanna try a point blank AoE Earth Ele, so I was just fishing for you're thoughts. This is mostly for fun (thought I'd point that out) so I'm not looking to be completely uber or match the meta builds, I just want something that is fun to play and fairly effective in most PvE situations. And I'm not looking for a specific build, I'll work those out myself, I just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were.

Well I hope you don't mean soloing with an Ele. I hate it when people MUST solo I mean cmon use Henchies they're there for a reason... You'll only waste time if you plan on soloing everything.
I believe Fire is the quickest and easiest, but Earth can do good, as well.
Here's a build I got for you. You'd probably have to try to at the very least get a run to cap the elite.
Ele/Necro
Attributes:
Earth 16
Blood: 10
Energy: 9
Skills:
1.) Well of Blood
2.) Ward Against Melee (or Elements depending on where you fight)
3.) Eruption
4.) Stone Daggers
5.) Blood Renewal
6.) Armor of Earth (or rez)
7.) Earth Attunement
8.) Elemental Attunement {E}
Trust me, getting these skills is worth it. This build kicked butt in 12v12 which is the closest thing in PvP to PvE, plus I don't see why this wouldn't work in PvE anyways.
Hope that helps.

It's not an either-or. You can change your build at various points in the game. E.g., Fire rocks early on, and the other attributes clearly lack enough spells to be at all useful.
Frankly, for PvE other than solo farming, I can't think of a single place in the game that I wouldn't go fire, and I've played up through Abbadon's Mouth.
And for Hell's Precipice I'm planning to go fire too, and just make sure Winter is available even if I have to go Ele/R and run it myself.
Except for special cases and solo farming, I go Ele/Me or Ele/Monk.
Early in the game /Me rocks just because of Ether Feast. Late in the game /Me is nice for anti-interrupt, but I run /Mo for Heal Party more often than not.

Guess it'd help to point out that I have most of the skills unlocked from my previous experience with an ele. So it's not a matter of avaliblity.

They unlock to that single character and account, meaning if you make a pvp character you will still be able to use them.
But when you start a character from scratch reguardless to wether you unlocked them before, you you will need to gain them for that pve character again.

But you can buy them from any skill trader with new characters once there unlocked. I'm at Ascalon and its like I'm at Ember Light Camp, that's what I'm aiming at, I have earth and fire skills availible to buy, but can only focus on one or the other due to skill points.

Earth FTW!
Well, typically you would go Fire, but you've gone Fire already, so why not try Earth?

Hmm. I don't think I recall a lot of enchantment stripping until the Caromi Tengu Wilds started showing up. Well, also Bog Skale Blighters, but there aren't a lot of those. So from that standpoint Earth should be viable early.

I think that Earth it is. And for no better reason than I did fire last time.

I'm making my Ele Water viable, Earth viable, and Air viable, it'll be costly, but ill never have to make a new elementalist

Earth kicks ass. Period. Obsidian Flame and Crystal Wave does over 100 dmg both and ignore armor (at least Flame does, not totally sure about Wave). Also got wards and shit. Real nice. Obsidian Flesh is the bee's knees.

Wave ignores armor, but negates all conditions on foe. Which doesn't matter if you're soloing.

Fire ele is the best type for playing PvE, but earth has definatly also some good skills in it. The problem is that you need to stand close to a target so that the monks have another person to heal all the time... You could use skills like earthquake and aftershock or crystalwave. Stonedaggers is the replacement for flare. Because you need to stand close to the foes, you could also boost your armor lvl whit armor of earth or kinetic armor.

Once you get to higher levels, I would disagree. Earth/Air seems more potent there, due to the high armor of the mobs, and the huge amounts of DoT AoEs in the Fire line.
Oh yeah, and Obsidian Flame/Wards hihi.

earth eles are actually very good at self healing with ether renewal because of the amount of enchantments we run

yup earth is the most self sufficient mages there is. Without being completely stripped we are harder to kill then most and Cooper is right, ether renewal provides a huge self heal and energy regain. 4 stone daggers will net you 44 energy with 4 enchantmens up. You can solo a good part of the game if you have all your skills unlocked already. Just take AoE, AoR, and Balthatzars spirit or Channeling. A -2DMG while enchanted shield with a health buff and a axe or sword with an enchant mod on it and your unstoppable. Earth FTW!

Factions may change that. Assassins do a lot of earth damage. And the elementalist ettins in the new Luxon Settlement quest do some too. Meanwhile, Ritualists do lightning damage.
